New Delhi (04/10/2012): "Minority
commission is a platform to listen to the
voices of voiceless and safeguard the
constitutional and the legal rights of
minorities. Our responsibility doesn't end
on just casting vote; we need play to
significant role for the betterment of the
system and to strengthen the democracy.
Right to Information (RTI) is a power to
people and an important tool to make
institutions and officers accountable", Mr.
Wajahat Habibullah, Chairperson, National
Commission for Minorities. He was
addressing in a lecture and interaction on
'Minorities in India: Identity and Security' at
SIO Headquarters, New Delhi.
"National Commission for Minorities is
concerned about the feeling of insecurity in
the Muslim community which is the
outcome of arresting of Muslim youths in
the name of terrorist activity. There is an
urgent need that through training or other
means an effort is made to make police
sensitive towards minorities. National
Commission for Minorities recommended
that victims who are found to be innocent
and acquitted by court should be
rehabilitated and compensated", He added.
In the inaugural address PM Salih, Secretary
General, Students Islamic Organisation of
India (SIO) opined that recent trend of
illegal arresting of Muslim youths has raised
questions on the very identity of the
Muslims in India. Why state is engaged in
terrorising its civilians rather than ensuring
their security. The message of the whole
programme was that Muslims should come
forward for their rights and security.

convened the program and Kashif Ahmad,
Asst. Public Relation Secretary, SIO
expressed gratitude. The lectures were
followed by interactions between the
audience and the resource persons.
