The West Bengal chapter of the Students Islamic Organisation of India
(SIO) headquartered in New Delhi held a demonstration followed by a
rally today at College Street against the rape and murder of a 2nd year
student of Derozio Memorial College. SIO expressed solidarity with the
family of the victim. Mr. Shadab Masum, member of the Central Advisory
Council (CAC) of SIO demands due investigation and capital punishment
to the rapists. He added that once a molestation or rape case is
proven, exemplary punishment should be given. In addition to this
incident, he expressed his grave concern on increasing rate of rape and
molestation throughout the country. As a remedy, he states that besides
providing exemplary punishment, the origin of such crimes must be
identified and prevention measures should be taken. In this context,
Ayatullah Farouque, P R Secretary of SIO WB added that the factors that
ignite sexual thoughts and feelings such as obscene still and motion
pictures, exposing human body, alcohol and other intoxicants, etc. must
be barred from society. Mohabbat Shaikh, former Campus Secretary states
that Islam has shown no mercy upon the rapists. Capital punishment
should be given to them.
