Kolkata, Dec 9: Violence in campuses,
political hegemony and undemocratic practices have disturbed the atmosphere of
the campuses today. Therefore, the West Bengal chapter of the Students Islamic
Organisation of India (SIO) has launched a statewide campaign, “Students voice
for Peaceful Campus” from December 1st till 15th. Through this campaign, SIO likes to urge the
student community to raise voice for peaceful campus while providing a clear
roadmap before them.
In a
press meet held today at Calcutta Press Club, Ashfaque Ahmed, National
President of SIO said that students should not be insensitive to issues in
social, economic, political and other spheres of life. Studenthood is the best
time engage in social reconstruction. “SIO strongly believes that student
politics is indeed beneficial to our society because it gives future leaders.
Student union election is the nursery to Indian politics”, he said. He added
that SIO intends to create a democratic and peaceful environment in the
campuses.
Appreciating
the decision of state government to continue the process of student union
election, Md. Mosiur Rahaman, State President of SIO said that students have
forgot the purpose of student politics. Instead of engaging in student welfare
activities, they have involved in power politics. Their motto has been to gain
and remain in power at any cost. This leads to campus unrest, violence and
blood shedding. They are expected to remain vigilant towards current affairs
and playing constructive role in nation building.
Mr.
Rahaman also added that in the name of students’ rights, creating disorder and
harassing professors are not acceptable. Ragging, teasing, drugs, obscenity and
other immoral practices must be stopped. As far as union election is concerned,
he said that external political influence must be prevented and the
recommendations of the Lyngdoh commission should be implemented.
